Rewind 99 Review

Rewind 99 is the Blockbuster fantasy with a bat. Gunmetal Games and Real Fake Games built a first-person 1999 store sim where you inherit the last VHS shop in Reshoot Springs and fight a streaming brand named RentNet by stocking parody tapes, rewinding returns, and installing a fight club. Early Access began in March 2026 on Steam for Windows at $11.99; Remix on 27 August is the studio 1.0. As of 29 August 2026 Steam reads Mostly Positive, 74% of 404 all-time and Recent Mixed, 42% of 19. That split is the review: people still love the vibe and still argue with hitching and staff after the technical pass. Steam’s introductory offer is 30% off to $8.39 through 10 September 2026. What is actually fun

The shop looks like a memory. Low-poly racks, a VHS mascot, neon strip-mall nights, movie titles that exist only to make you snort (The Codfather, Illegally Blonde). The first hour of ordering four genres, dragging boxes off a truck that might explode, and learning the left-bin rewind dance is better onboarding than most clerk sims. Town runs with a wooden bat against kiosks are the Schedule-1-adjacent spice: you are not a gang, you are a franchisee with anger issues.

Side hustles are the long hook. Claw machines, candy dealers, pizza guns, mixing original films — ranked on the tier list — keep a Friday from being “more Comedy tapes.” Online co-op for four clerks is the correct way to play if your friends will assign jobs; the co-op guide exists because they will not, unless you make them.

If you wanted a cozy shop, this is not cozy. If you wanted a 90s toy box that sometimes lets you run a store, it delivers.

What players burned out on

Employee AI. Stockers filing Comedy onto Action, cashiers wandering, wages deleting a day’s profit. Remix rebuilt that brain and made new saves mandatory. If you read a March review about useless staff, check whether the author ever saw Remix. Legacy-branch co-op still uses the older mind.

Performance. Unreal Engine 5 plus a growing shop turned late-game CPU into a second job. People with 3060-class cards reported ugly frame drops as decorations piled up. Remix’s whole point was that overhaul plus an expanded map. System requirements are a GTX 1060 / 8 GB floor and an RTX 3060 / 16 GB recommendation. Steam Deck is unsupported. Believe that.

Bugs at launch were not theoretical: stuck customers, rewind cycles that lie, falling through the floor, exploding trucks, missing autosave habits (F5 is the habit). 0.9.32 and later notes chipped at the list. The patch history is long on purpose.

The town was pretty and sparse. Pier 67 and Remix mapping were the answers. It is still not a full life sim; it is errands attached to a shop. That is fine if you came for clerking. It is not fine if you came for an RPG city.

Who should play

Buy it if you like clerk sims, 90s parody, and friends on voice chat who will sit on rewind while you smash a kiosk. Read the beginner guide and the Remix notes the same night you install, because the wrong Steam beta will waste an evening.

Wait (or wait for a sale) if you need split-screen, Steam Deck, bulletproof staff, or a finished campaign. The studio talked about a long Early Access with more town and more hustles. Remix was a technical 1.0-shaped update, not a promise that every system is done. Co-op temporarily living on Legacy is the honest current sentence.

Verdict

Rewind 99 is the rare shop sim with a personality loud enough to survive its own jank. The analog loop — stock, rewind, collect, smash — is strong. The hustle layer is stronger when you do not skip memberships. The EA tax is real: saves get wiped, branches confuse lobbies, employees needed a sequel’s worth of AI work. At $11.99 — or $8.39 while the intro offer lasts through 10 September 2026 — the fantasy of saving physical media is still the reason to clock in. Just keep F5 in your left hand.
