Employees Guide

Employees are the most requested feature in Rewind 99 and, for months of Early Access, the most complained about. Gunmetal Games spent the Remix technical update in late August 2026 rebuilding staff AI on purpose. This page is how clerks actually use people: who to hire, what to assign, what they still do wrong, and when a self-checkout is cheaper than a personality. If you are still unloading the first truck, finish the beginner guide first — wages will wreck a day-one bankroll.

What staff are for

You cannot stand on rewind, checkout, and a RentNet kiosk at once. Employees exist to hold a station while you do the town half of the shift. The jobs that usually work:

  • Checkout / cashier — the role players defend even in negative Steam reviews. A body at the register lets you collect late fees. Hotfix #1 (27 August) cut checkout 5s → 2s per item. Self-checkouts later steal this job in a good way.
  • Returns / rewind — after 0.9.32, staff load and unload Tier 2 rewind machines and will unload a station even if they currently have no tape. That used to stall the line forever. Still walk the rewind loop yourself until you trust them.
  • Restock — the controversial one. Pre-Remix stockers put tapes on the first empty slot, mixed genres, and turned the back room into a junk drawer. Remix aimed at that. Even after the rebuild, obsessive clerks restock themselves and leave NPCs on returns.

Do not hire “because the Store Manager showed two names.” Randall and Diane both costing a few hundred up front plus daily wages is a payroll event. One player counted roughly a thousand dollars a day disappearing into staff and still called it worth it — because they had already automated checkout. Copy the automation, not the headcount.

Payday is a fail state

If the register cannot cover wages, employees quit. There is no soft “IOU.” Keep a cash floor that survives a quiet Tuesday. Scratchers, claw refills, and basement expansions are how people miss payday. The money guide treats payroll as a first bill, not an afterthought. In co-op, one host hiring three clerks without telling the lobby is how friendships end.

Shift assignment exists: park a person on a station and leave them there. Wandering “helpers” are how Mixed Movies land on Action. If a worker is carrying product around the store instead of docking it, take the item and reset the task.

Remix versus muscle memory

Community complaints were consistent: idle staff, wrong shelves, late-game CPU death as the town filled. Remix is the studio’s answer — rebuilt AI, performance pass, new saves required. If you are still on the Legacy Steam beta for co-op, you are on the older brain. Do not judge Remix staff by a Legacy shift, and do not expect Legacy saves to boot on Remix. See the Remix update.

Patch 0.9.32 also stopped Mixed Movies from landing on the wrong genre as a coded bug; human misfile is a separate issue. After you author a mixed title, confirm the Store Manager list refreshed, then put that spine on a bay you own.

When not to hire

  • You cannot describe what they will do for the next hour.
  • You are about to expand a basement you cannot staff.
  • You do not have self-checkouts and already lose the evening queue.
  • You are hunting collectibles and will be out of the shop for thirty minutes with nobody on rewind.

Self-checkouts plus an auto-rewinder are the “employees” a lot of high-level clerks actually wanted. They do not mix genres. They do not need dinner. Buy those before a fourth personality. Layout them on the store layout page so the queue does not block the truck door.

Combat, customers, and NPCs that are not staff

Repo Man is a hustle, not an employee. He recovers overdue tapes for a cut. Candy dealers, fighters, and pizza guns are also hustles — unlock path on the tier list. Do not confuse a VIP member with a hired clerk. Members unlock hardware; clerks cost wages.

Customers stuck in doors, cancelled transactions bricking a shopper, and zero activations at max level were launch-week bugs (the last one got a 0.9.32 fix). If the floor freezes, restart before you fire everyone. Remix targeted the broader hitch; patch notes keep the smaller list.

Hire slow, assign one job, protect payday, and let machines replace the second stocker. That is the whole staff meta until Gunmetal publishes the next AI pass.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Are Rewind 99 employees worth hiring?

Cashiers and rewinders, yes, once you can survive payday. Stockers are optional even after Remix. Self-checkouts often beat a second restocker.

Why do my workers put tapes on the wrong shelf?

They path to empty slots and used to ignore genre. Remix rebuilt that AI. Check the wall after rushes, or restock yourself. See how to rewind tapes.

What happens if I cannot pay them?

They quit. Keep a cash buffer. Do not spend the wage pile on scratchers or a basement.

Did Remix fix employee AI?

That was the point of the late-August 2026 technical update, along with performance. New saves were required. Co-op on Legacy still uses the older build.
