How to Rewind Tapes in Rewind 99

The rewind station is the joke and the job. Every return in Rewind 99 arrives unspooled, and a tape that is not rewound cannot go back on a rental shelf. Players bounce off the tutorial because the left bin looks like junk storage. It is not. This page is the full loop, the upgrades, and the staff mistakes that still happen after Early Access began in March 2026. The loop, slowly

1. Take an unrewound cassette from the return counter or a customer handoff.
2. Place it in the left bin. Treat that bin as a dedicated shelf that only accepts tapes waiting for the machine.
3. Interact with the rewind desk so the machine is the active station.
4. Drag the tape from the left bin into the rewind deck.
5. Press the button. Wait for the cycle. Do not yank the cassette early.
6. Drag the finished tape to the right side / restock area, then walk it to the correct genre shelf.

Why it feels slow on purpose

Rewinding is busywork until you buy throughput. One machine plus an evening rush is a bottleneck you can hear. Fixes, in order:

• Park the station on a short path between returns and shelves. See store layout.
• Add a second machine or a Tier 2 rewinder when the Store Manager sells it. Patch 0.9.32 taught employees to load and unload Tier 2 decks and to unload even when they currently have no tape — that used to stall the line.
• Assign a human to returns if you play co-op. One clerk on rewind, one on checkout, one in town is the clean three-player split.
• Self-checkouts free your hands for the button more than another stocker does.

Do not let finished tapes live in the machine. The deck is not storage. Every completed cassette should already be walking toward Drama or Comedy.

Employees and the wrong genre

Staff can work rewind and they can also ruin a wall. Before Remix, restockers placed tapes on the first empty slot, mixed Mixed Movies onto the wrong genre, and left the back room looking like a yard sale. The late-August 2026 Remix update rebuilt employee AI; it still pays to check the wall after a rush. Mixed Movies from the splicing hustle are easy to misfile because they are originals with custom covers. After you author a title, the Store Manager item list should refresh (that refresh was a 0.9.32 fix). Put those tapes on a dedicated bay if you have one so a stocker cannot hide Wedding Slashers inside Sci-Fi.

When the station bugs out

Early Access still includes jank. If the deck eats a tape, F5 is your friend — the demo patch rebound F5 from a debug toggle into a real quicksave. If you fall through the map while using a station, the Sudoku recovery option is the official “get me unstuck” tool; a later patch also stopped knockdowns from teleporting the station to the hospital.
