This beginner guide is the first-shift checklist: what the Store Manager wants, how the delivery truck works, why the rewind station has a left bin, and when to leave the counter with a wooden bat. Play it solo or with friends in online co-op. Early Access began in March 2026 on Steam; if your build is the Remix branch from late August 2026, start a new save rather than dragging an old file across.

Minute one: the Store Manager order

Interact with the Store Manager terminal inside the shop. The tutorial asks you to order four shelves plus sixteen Animation, sixteen Comedy, sixteen Action, and sixteen Sci-Fi movies. That mix is not flavor text — customers spawn with genre taste, and a wall of only Action will stall loyalty on romance or animation VIPs later. Pay from the thin starting bankroll. Do not also impulse-buy a claw machine or candy dealer on this screen; those unlocks want VIP members, not leftover tutorial cash.

Walk to the back of the store. The delivery truck parks in the alley. Boxes are physical objects: pick them up, haul them inside, and place shelves on the grid. Q and E rotate furniture while you ghost the footprint. Keep a center aisle wide enough for customers and for you to sprint a return to the rewind station. Place tapes on matching shelves. Drama, Comedy, Animation, Action, Sci-Fi and later mixed titles all have labels for a reason. Early employees will happily dump a comedy onto an empty action slot — that is why many clerks restock themselves until Remix staff behavior feels trustworthy. Read the employees guide before you hire two people you cannot pay. Payday is real; if the register cannot cover wages, staff quit and you are back on the counter.

When a customer reaches checkout, complete the transaction. Later you can add number-key credit-card entry and self-checkouts around the mid-level unlock. Until then, you are the clerk. Do not wander across town with a queue at the desk unless a friend is covering co-op.

Be kind, rewind

Returns arrive unrewound. The station tutorial is easy to misread: the left bin is an exclusive shelf for tapes that still need rewind. Stock that bin first, interact with the desk, drag a cassette into the machine, press the button, wait, then drag the finished tape to the right / restock side. That loop is also your first money leak. Every minute a finished tape sits in the machine is a minute it is not on a shelf earning a rental. Build a habit: bin, rewind, shelf, then snacks. The streaming rival is not a story beat you wait for. Kiosks sit in town and siphon customers. The Store Manager sells a wooden baseball bat. Buy it, leave the shop, and destroy three kiosks when the tutorial asks. That is not optional flavor; ignoring boxes makes the floor feel dead even if your shelves are pretty. Late tapes show on the compass as cassette markers. Walk or scooter. Some debtors negotiate; some need the bat. Do not start a collection run at peak evening rush unless someone is watching checkout.

First-week priorities, in order

1. Keep four genres on the floor and the rewind bin empty.
2. Smash nearby RentNet kiosks whenever they respawn in your loop.
3. Save cash for self-checkouts and a second rewind machine before a basement.
4. Watch VIP loyalty. 100% loyalty turns a VIP into a member and unlocks that customer’s side hustle. Do not buy Fight Club hardware before the membership flag exists.
5. Hit F5 before experiments. The Sudoku recovery option exists for falling through the map, but a quicksave is cheaper than a speech.

When the first hustle is actually unlocked, compare it on the side hustle tier list instead of placing the loudest toy in the doorway. Candy and claw machines are early; Fight Club wants a basement and the right hustle level. Movie Mixing wants spare tapes and shelf space for original covers.

Hardware and expectations

Confirm system requirements before you promise four-player nights. Steam Deck is unsupported. Remix targeted late-game CPU spikes and idle employees; it also required new save files, with co-op temporarily on the Steam Legacy beta until the studio restores it on Remix.
