Rewind 99 Co-op Guide

Four clerks, one dying VHS shop, and a streaming rival that does not care you brought friends.

Co-op Multiplayer

Rewind 99 supports online co-op for up to four players. Friends share one store, one town, and one bankroll. That is the pitch: someone rewinds, someone checkouts, someone smashes RentNet, someone chases late tapes on a scooter. It is also the feature that moved after the Remix technical update in late August 2026. Read this before you invite a lobby onto the wrong Steam branch.

Remix, Legacy, and which build to launch

Remix rebuilt performance and employee AI and required new save files. Steam’s live store text is sharper than a Discord rumor: co-op is temporarily disabled in the main build due to performance instability. To play today, Library → Rewind 99 → Properties → Betas → Legacy. That branch runs the June-era build and older saves. Remix saves you create now are meant to become co-op compatible when the feature returns. Restoring co-op is the studio’s stated top priority, with a timeline after 1.0 hotfixes. Do not copy a Legacy world onto Remix and do not mix friends across branches. Full context lives in the Remix update notes.

This is still Early Access (it began in March 2026), not a finished live-service. Lobbies have broken with an “INVALID” toast; 0.9.32 replaced that with a real join/leave message. If a friend cannot see the shop, restart the host, confirm the same beta, then reinvite.

Split the shift like a real store

Four bodies in one aisle is worse than one good clerk. Assign jobs:

  • Host / closer — Store Manager orders, layout, payday buffer. Reads how to make money.
  • Rewind lead — owns the left bin and the button. See how to rewind tapes.
  • Floor — restock and snacks. Do not let two people fight over the same shelf grid.
  • Town runner — bat, kiosks, late fees, Probe ‘n’ Go nights. See how to beat RentNet.

Three-player lobbies drop the floor role and let the host restock between orders. Two-player lobbies should never both leave the shop at rush. One creator’s co-op demo spent half the session teaching the left bin over voice; watch the mid-article Stumpt video so you skip that lecture.

Shared objects and old bugs

Mirror, rewind station, and cosmetics vendor used to break for everyone after one player used them. The Next Fest demo patched that class of bug; still, serialize station use. Do not stack four cursors on checkout. Customers already get stuck in doors — extra bodies make pathing worse. Keep store layout wide on purpose when you expect a lobby.

Employees are shared costs. If the host hires three clerks and the town runner is out collecting, payday still hits the one register. Agree on a cash floor. Staff who do not get paid quit, which is funny once. Details in the employees guide.

Remote clients have had NPCs clipping, trucks you can trap yourself in, and title-sequence softlocks. Host on the stronger PC — system requirements are not decorative. Steam Deck is unsupported for anyone in the party.

What co-op is good at

Town pressure. Kiosks, late tapes, and side-hustle errands are the content that makes a solo Friday feel like two jobs. A runner who only exists to smash RentNet and refill the claw machine is how four players stay amused without four people dragging the same comedy cassette. Membership hunting is also easier: one player can babysit a VIP’s favorite genre while another works collectibles.

What co-op is bad at: interior design by committee, and anyone “just looking at the basement” during a queue. Use F5 (host) before experiments. Sudoku unsticks a body that fell through the map without resetting the whole lobby — most of the time.

When Remix co-op returns, expect to start fresh worlds rather than dragging Legacy chaos forward. Until then, pick a branch as a group, assign the four jobs, and treat the beginner guide as required reading before voice chat starts. Official Discord and Steam discussion links sit on the links hub if a patch flips the beta names again.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How many players can play Rewind 99 co-op?

Up to four online. There is no split-screen. After Remix, use the Steam Legacy beta until co-op is restored on the new build.

Why can my friend not join?

Mismatched branches (Remix vs Legacy), an old INVALID lobby toast, or a host still on the title sequence. Same beta, restart host, reinvite.

Who should rewind in a four-player lobby?

One dedicated rewind lead. Everyone else will fight over the left bin and stall the machine. Read how to rewind tapes.

Do we share money and employees?

Yes. One register, one payroll. Hire only if the lobby agrees on a payday buffer. See employees.
